President-elect Prabowo Subianto, who will be serving for the 2024-2029 term, received a congratulatory call from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday (1/5). The call centered on the continuation of cooperation between Canada and Indonesia.
Justin expressed his delight at Prabowo’s victory in the recent election, stating, “I am very pleased to congratulate you on your strong victory in the massive election. I am extremely delighted.” Prabowo, in turn, appreciated the congratulations and praised both Pierre Trudeau, Justin’s father, and Justin himself for their leadership.
In response, Prabowo said, “Thank you, sir. It’s an honor for me to receive your call directly. I have always admired your father and you, your leadership, and I look forward to working with you.”
The discussion between Justin and Prabowo also touched on various topics of mutual interest aimed at enhancing bilateral relations between Canada and Indonesia, particularly in light of their strong economic connections.
Both leaders reiterated their support for the ongoing negotiations surrounding the Canada-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. They also anticipated the Canadian Trade Mission to Indonesia at the end of the year.
Additionally, Prabowo and Justin conversed about Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy continuation, including potential collaboration opportunities in the essential minerals sector.
