Prabowo Subianto Aims to Decrease Tuition Fees at Public Universities: Calculations Are Necessary

Jakarta – President-elect Prabowo Subianto has made a commitment to reduce the Single Tuition Fee (UKT) for public universities. He plans to work diligently to achieve this goal during his upcoming leadership.

This statement was made by Prabowo during an exclusive interview on TvOne titled “Prabowo Subianto Speaks for Indonesia” today, Wednesday, (22/5).

“Especially in state universities, which are funded by public money (state budget), the fees should not be high, ideally minimal or free. We need to crunch the numbers and put in the effort to make it happen,” Prabowo stated.

He also emphasized how the education system has drastically changed since the New Order era, turning education into an industry that follows capitalist principles.

“The mindset is that everything can be commodified, even though it is a public good and a social responsibility for a nation,” Prabowo stressed.

Looking ahead, Prabowo mentioned that the government will explore ways to enhance the education sector to keep up with the changing times.

One of the programs expected to boost state revenue significantly is the industrial downstreaming introduced by President Jokowi.

“We must implement downstreaming to add value and enhance our education,” he explained.
