Bayani is a native Papuan who is highly respected in KOPASSUS for his calm demeanor, boldness, and exceptional shooting and tracking abilities. During the 1996 Mapenduma hostage rescue operation, Bayani’s expertise was crucial in navigating conflicting intelligence reports. Despite advice from British intelligence experts, Bayani confidently dismissed their information, citing the lack of water in the area as a reason why the hostages could not be located there.
Known for his bravery and fieldcraft techniques, Bayani was recommended to a senior officer by Major Zacky Anwar for his exceptional soldiering skills. Bayani’s ability to move silently through the jungle and infiltrate enemy camps alone made him a standout soldier in Papua. He was able to seize over 100 weapons from enemy combatants, a feat that impressed many in the military.
During the Mapenduma operation, Bayani led the Kasuari Team, a group of expert trackers tasked with locating the hostages deep in the treacherous jungle. Despite limited equipment and resources, the team relied on Bayani’s tracking skills to navigate the rugged terrain and locate the hostages. The operation was considered a success, marking a significant achievement in hostage rescue missions in the jungle.
