The Straits Times Shines a Light on Prabowo Subianto’s Global Impact as Indonesia’s Future President

Prabowo Subianto, the president-elect of Indonesia for the 2024-2029 term, is expected to boost Indonesia’s global influence significantly after assuming office. The Straits Times, a well-known media outlet in Singapore, recently published an article titled “Prabowo has big plans for Indonesia on the global stage” on Saturday (21/9), where experts and the public foresee an active foreign policy agenda under Prabowo’s leadership.

The article highlighted that Prabowo has already started acting as Indonesia’s unofficial foreign minister even before officially taking office by visiting over 10 countries within a seven-month period after winning the election. These countries include major global players such as China, Japan, Russia, and Australia.

The publication also included feedback from Indonesian citizens who are hopeful about Prabowo’s presidency, believing that he is focused on enhancing Indonesia’s role in global diplomacy. Many anticipate that Prabowo will strengthen communication between Indonesia and other nations, possibly serving as a mediator in conflict resolution when needed.

Prabowo’s recent diplomatic engagements, both as the Defense Minister and the future president of Indonesia, demonstrate his commitment to international affairs. Notably, his involvement in the Israel-Palestine conflict showcased his dedication to addressing global conflicts.

Julia Lau, a senior fellow at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore, mentioned in the article that Prabowo is expected to take on a more assertive role in shaping Indonesia’s foreign policy. However, she emphasized the importance of having a competent Ministry of Foreign Affairs to implement Prabowo’s ambitious vision effectively.

While there is optimism surrounding Prabowo’s presidency, The Straits Times also pointed out that the Indonesian public is cautious and hopes that he will fulfill his campaign promises and take concrete actions to prove doubters wrong.

As Prabowo prepares to assume office, there is keen interest in how he will elevate Indonesia’s global presence, navigate key geopolitical challenges, and promote the nation’s interests in an increasingly interconnected world. (RR)
