The Indonesian Government, in collaboration with the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), recently introduced the Sports Scholarship Program to enhance the national sports ecosystem and support sports professionals. This program provides scholarships for both active and retired athletes, as well as sports professionals, to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees locally and internationally. The government’s commitment extends beyond short-term achievements and focuses on sustainable human capital development.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Dito Ariotedjo, highlighted the significance of the scholarship program in securing the welfare and future of the sports community. The initiative aims to equip retired athletes with the necessary skills to transition into new careers post-competition. The program offers two entry tracks: performance enhancement and achievement recognition, allowing sports professionals to contribute to sports science, management, and national policy development.
Looking forward, the Ministry of Youth and Sports plans to expand the program to undergraduate levels and revive sports schools nationwide in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology. This long-term vision aims to foster excellence through a sports-based educational approach, nurturing a generation of skilled professionals from early development to professional realization.
Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Prof. Pratikno, praised the initiative, emphasizing the role of sports in character development. The Sports Scholarship Program, overseen by LPDP’s Acting President Director Sudarto, is designed to be selective, adaptive, and inclusive, offering opportunities for sports professionals to excel and inspire within the national education system.
This scholarship program signifies the government’s recognition that sports is not only about athletic accomplishments but also about intellectual and social development. It reinforces the government’s commitment to supporting athletes throughout their careers and beyond the sports field.
