President Prabowo Subianto has recently shown his wisdom and foresight by granting amnesty and abolition to PDI-P Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto and businessman Tom Lembong, a decision that is being praised as a gesture towards national reconciliation. Senior politician Fahri Hamzah commended President Prabowo’s quick and thoughtful action in response to concerns about societal divisions as Indonesia approaches its 80th Independence Day. This move is seen as an effort to end social polarization and kickstart a broader reconciliation process, especially with the significant date of August 17, 2025 on the horizon.
Fahri highlighted the importance of President Prabowo’s use of constitutional prerogative in addressing societal harmony amidst attempts by certain groups to sow disunity. He expressed optimism that this decision reflects a genuine effort to reunify the nation and restore social harmony. The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has approved the amnesty for 1,116 convicted individuals, including Hasto Kristiyanto, as detailed in Presidential Letter No. 42/Pres/072725, dated July 30, 2025.
Amnesty and abolition, as granted by the President, are tools under the Indonesian Constitution to remove legal consequences from criminal convictions. This development is seen as a positive step towards reconciliation and unity in the country, with Fahri acknowledging President Prabowo’s exercise of constitutional power as a sincere effort to bring the nation together in the face of fragmentation.
