Spire Motorsports co-owner Jeff Dickerson recently responded to a lawsuit filed by Joe Gibbs Racing in a legal filing. Detailing his deep personal relationship with Chris Gabehart, Dickerson expressed disappointment in the lawsuit. With a background in grassroots racing, agent work, and spotting, Dickerson co-founded the Spire Sports and Entertainment agency in 2010. Throughout his legal defenses, he emphasized his extensive relationships in the motorsports industry.
The conflict arose from JGR hiring Robert ‘Cheddar’ Smith, a Cup Series car chief previously under contract with Spire. When JGR approached Smith for future employment while he was still under contract, Dickerson proposed a player-to-be-named-later type agreement. However, tensions escalated as JGR replaced Tyler Allen with Gabehart as the crew chief for the No. 54 team.
Despite attempts at a trade understanding, negotiations broke down between Spire and JGR, leading Gabehart to consider leaving due to a challenging work environment at JGR. Eventually, Spire reached out to Gabehart and hired him, prompting JGR to sue over concerns of proprietary information theft and poaching sponsors.
Dickerson affirmed that Spire had its own resources, partnerships, and strategies in place, making JGR’s claims baseless. The legal dispute between the two teams continues, with both sides providing detailed accounts of their interactions.
