Flavio Briatore Confirms Mercedes Interest in Alpine F1 Team Acquisition

Mercedes Formula 1 team intends to acquire a stake in the rival Alpine outfit, as confirmed by Flavio Briatore. Recent reports clarified that the potential transaction involves Mercedes itself, not just Toto Wolff. Alpine’s team boss corroborated this during a press conference at the Chinese Grand Prix, stating that the German brand plans to purchase a 24% stake in the Enstone-based team. These shares are currently owned by Otro Capital, an investment group that includes movie stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny, along with golfer Rory McIlroy. At $233 million, Otro Capital acquired the shares back in 2023, but due to the increased value of F1 teams, the figure is expected to be higher this time around. The Alpine team’s value has more than doubled since then, now reaching $3 billion.

Flavio Briatore mentioned that Mercedes is engaged in negotiations, not with Toto Wolff, but with the company directly. Several potential buyers are in consideration, including former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. When asked if he was tempted to buy the stake himself, Briatore denied any personal interest and expressed that they are open to other buyers. Alpine switched to a Mercedes engine supply for the 2026 F1 season, following the end of its power unit program. This move was required by Briatore as a condition for his return as an advisor and de facto team boss. Concerns were raised about possible influence from Mercedes on Alpine’s operations and votes in the F1 Commission, but Briatore assured that the majority ownership structure would maintain control within the team.

Audi team principal Jonathan Wheatley showed no apprehension about the potential deal, emphasizing the clear governance within the sport. Briatore and others involved expressed positivity and enthusiasm for the transaction. Despite some uncertainties, the potential partnership between Mercedes and Alpine holds promise for the future of both teams in Formula 1.
