Characteristics of Authentic Military Leaders

My mentors from the ‘45 generation are leaders in the field, combat, and military. They have taught me five important lessons that have shaped my character: Patriotism, Confidence, Intellect, Good Sense of Humor, and Flexibility. Their love for the nation, unwavering confidence, thirst for knowledge, ability to connect emotionally, and adaptability have been invaluable to me.

The attitude and leadership of a military leader are honed on the battlefield. As a young officer, I had the privilege of learning from many heroes of the independence war and military leaders in the early days of the Republic of Indonesia. These individuals, known as the ‘45 generation, played a crucial role in the fight for Indonesia’s independence.

My family is deeply rooted in the ‘45 generation. My grandfather, Margono Djojohadikusumo, and my uncles were all involved in the struggle for independence, making great sacrifices for the nation. Their legacy and spirit have been passed down to me, shaping my values and outlook on life.

Growing up in a family of freedom fighters and having the opportunity to interact with key figures of the ‘45 generation, such as Mohammad Hatta and Soemitro Djojohadikusumo, has had a profound impact on me. Their stories of courage, sacrifice, and resilience have inspired me to uphold the values of independence, sovereignty, and honour.

During my time at the Armed Forces Academy, I had the privilege of learning from exceptional leaders of the ‘45 generation, such as Sarwo Edhie Wibowo, Himawan Sutanto, and Wijogo Atmodarminto. Their wisdom, experience, and dedication to serving the nation have left a lasting impression on me.

Through my service as a young officer, I was fortunate to interact with more esteemed figures of the ‘45 generation, such as Benny Moerdani and Ali Moertopo. Their leadership, professionalism, and commitment to the country have been a source of inspiration for me in my military career.

In conclusion, the lessons and values instilled in me by the ‘45 generation have shaped me into the leader I am today. Their patriotism, confidence, intellect, sense of humor, and flexibility have guided me in my military service and will continue to influence me in the years to come.
