President Prabowo Subianto recently shared that he had engaged in direct discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding trade tariffs. The negotiations were described as challenging but ultimately fruitful as both parties came to an agreement. During the talks, there was a clear demonstration of mutual understanding of each country’s national interests. As a result, the United States agreed to reduce import tariffs on Indonesian goods from 32% to 19%.
Prabowo emphasized the careful consideration and calculation by the Indonesian government throughout the negotiation process to ensure the protection of public interests and domestic workers. He highlighted the importance of safeguarding the nation’s workers and expressed the firm stance taken during the discussions. Additionally, Prabowo expressed confidence in Indonesia’s economic strength amid global uncertainties.
Looking ahead, Prabowo mentioned plans for a potential visit to the United States, with a meeting with President Trump possibly taking place in September or October. Despite the serious nature of the discussions, Prabowo lightened the mood by joking about the prospect of playing golf with Trump during the visit.
