Porsche Penske Motorsport faced a significant weight penalty following their dominating performance at the 12 Hours of Sebring, where they secured a 1-2 finish. The International Automobile Federation (FIA) announced that Porsche 963 would have to compete with the most unfavorable power-to-weight ratio in the history of the Hypercar/GTP regulations – 480 kilowatts at 1,100 kilograms. This decision came after the Toyota GR010 Hybrid’s dominance in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) led to an increase in the maximum additional weight for LMDh cars to 70 kilograms.
Now, Porsche faces the challenge of competing with a power-to-weight ratio of 2.292 kg/kW, or 480 kilowatts at 1,100 kilograms, particularly at speeds up to 190 km/h. This poses a weight penalty of 45 kilograms compared to Sebring. Additionally, new BoP adjustments have been made for JDC-Miller Motorsports’ previous-year Porsche, ensuring a varied playing field with different homologation statuses for vehicles.
In terms of power-to-weight ratios at speeds up to 190 km/h, BMW emerges as the most favored, followed by other manufacturers like Cadillac, Acura, and both versions of the Porsche 963. While Porsche’s performance reduction garners attention, it’s crucial to note the adjustments made for other manufacturers such as Acura, Cadillac, and BMW, showcasing a mix of weight penalties and power upgrades.
Looking beyond 200 km/h speed range, the gap between Aston Martin and other manufacturers is pronounced due to its aerodynamic constraints. Each manufacturer’s BoP values are now updated, affecting their performance on the track compared to previous races. Acura stands out as the only manufacturer with a slightly improved rating above 200 km/h, while other manufacturers face restrictions.
The changes in BoP values reflect a dynamic landscape in motorsports, with each manufacturer vying for optimal performance within the constraints set by regulations. Porsche’s drastic power reduction amid stiff competition signals an intense battle ahead on the race track.
